L-Arginine Prevents Heart Disease

Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid and it is found in foods containing protein. L-Arginine was first identified in 1886 and even though our bodies make in sufficient quantities there are times when there is a need to supplement with additional amounts.

Arginine is a chemical precursor to nitric oxide and is one of the simplest biological molecules in nature. Nitric oxide has worked its way into a great many areas of biology and medicine ranging from its role as a critical endogenous regulator of the circulatory system and thrombosis, to a principal neurotransmitter mediating erectile function to a major pathophysiological mediator of inflammation and host defence.

Nobel prize winner Dr. Ignarro discusses the importance of Nitric Oxide to a healthy heart

Early evidence suggests that arginine may help treat medical conditions that improve with increased vasodilation (the widening of blood vessels resulting from relaxation of smooth muscle cells within the vessel walls, particularly in the large arteries). These conditions include chest pain, atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), heart disease or failure, erectile dysfunction, intermittent claudication/peripheral vascular disease, and vascular headaches (headache-inducing blood vessel swelling).

Arginine also triggers the body to make protein and has been studied for healing wounds, bodybuilding, enhancing sperm production, and preventing tissue wasting in people with critical illnesses.
